Message from the Former Chairwoman

Deborah Carothers
Former Chairperson and 2008 Entertainment Director (left)
Thanks to all who attended the Streetsboro Family Days this year. We had great weather, great entertainment, and a great turnout.
Thursday’s opening ceremony was a show of American patriotism. Chuck Keiper sang the national anthem after members of the American Legion raised the flag. The families of Jason Hernandez and Benjamin Dillon were present as Mayor Wagner and State Representative Kathleen Chandler paid tribute to our hometown heroes who sacrificed their lives in service to their country. Thursday night’s car and bike show was a huge success thanks in large part to the support of Mark Thompson of Action Auto. (continued below)

Friday featured Buckymania. Thousands of people flocked to Streetsboro City Park to see the former American Idol finalist and country music sensation Bucky Covington. He was joined on stage by his identical twin brother Rocky. Opening for Bucky were the Nelson brothers, identical twin sons of the late Ricky Nelson. Even though Twins Days in Twinsburg was taking place at the same time as our event this year, Streetsboro was able to proudly showcase twins of their own. Near the end of Bucky’s show, the Streetsboro audience witnessed pop culture history being made when Matthew and Gunnar Nelson joined Bucky and Rocky Covington on stage for an impromptu performance of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall.” The reason I say that history was being made is because that performance marks the first time, to my knowledge, that two sets of identical twin singers with national notoriety have joined together before any audience for a musical performance. And it happened right here in Streetsboro. And by the way, Streetsboro’s own “Robert Jeffrey Band” kicked off the entertainment, opening for the Nelsons. I’d like to thank Mustang Salliz for helping to sponsor the Bucky Covington concert, WQMX , WTAM, and WMJI radio stations, and Record Publishing for their promotion of the event.
Saturday was another night of quality entertainment. By popular demand, Sonny Geraci returned to Streetsboro Family Days for the fourth year in a row and gave another stellar performance, this time with a horn section that took the already excellent show to a new level. Billy Joe Royal headlined Saturday night and sang like a bird, proving that this talented man who attained fame in the 60’s has “kept his chops up” and continues to be a singer’s singer. Streetsboro Visitor’s Convention sponsored a fantastic fireworks display that followed Billy Joe Royal and Chrysler sponsored a “Dance to the Oldies party” featuring “Buddy Dee and the Hitmen” that followed the fireworks.
On Sunday, Step 2 sponsored free rides for the first 200 children who arrived. And the kids lined up for hours ahead of time. Browns Amusement contributed an additional 30 wristbands so as many kids as possible could enjoy free rides all day!
This year was the first year that Streetsboro Family Days offered beer for sale. And although a few people were concerned that beer might cause problems, their concerns proved needless because we had no problems. Other events that helped make the Streetsboro Family Days a success were the 5-10K run walk, the dog show, the performances by Lisa’s School of Dance and Keithe Williams Performing Arts Academy, the martial arts demonstration, and the donut-eating contest.
Thanks to all of our sponsors, especially Geis Companies who have repeatedly offered to be the main event sponsor every year. And thanks also to the many volunteers, especially Streetsboro Family Days Founder and President. Chuck Kocisko, , Dave Kocisko, Rich Taiclet, and Bob Carothers. Please visit our sponsors link and volunteers link to see all of our sponsors and volunteers, too numerous to mention individually here. And, of course, thanks to the City of Streetsboro. With all of us joining together and contributing as a community, we can continue to make Streetsboro Family Days one spectacular event.
