Message from the Former Chairwoman
I would like to thank all who helped in making the 2007 Streetsboro Family Days a huge success.
Despite the threat of rain and thunderstorms, the sun shined on the Thursday opening ceremony. The Streetsboro marching band played several numbers, the American Legion raised the flag, Streetsboro members of the armed forces cut the ribbon, and Councilmen Pete Buzcowski and Tom Horsfeld sang the national anthem (to the surprise of many who did not know that the Councilmen can actually sing.) Arthur Saunders, an original Tuskegee airman gave a short speech on the history of the African-American airmen in WWII. Rain followed after the opening ceremony which affected the attendance at the car show on Thursday night.
After a short bout with downpours on Friday, the weather cleared and Streetsboro rocked at the Friday night concert by Mark Farner. This concert by the former lead singer of Grand Funk Railroad fulfilled its billing as a history-making, electrifying, bonafide rock concert of world-class caliber. The fact that the Streetsboro City Park venue cannot compare to the 180,000-seat sold-out stadium venues Mark has performed at in the past, did not stop him from putting his whole heart and soul into performing for the folks in Streetsboro. The crowd could not contain its excitement as Mark, in pure Grand Funk style, sang with that rock-n-roll soul, played with energy, and moved across the stage with classic rock star showmanship. The concert ended with the crowd on its feet shouting for an encore which Mark graciously provided.
The concert attracted such widespread media attention. WNCX interviewed Mark on the Mudd, Mihalik and Mike morning show before the concert on Friday and Sonny Geraci interviewed him on the Mike Trivisano talk radio program on Wednesday. The announcement of the show also garnered widespread newspaper coverage As a result, many people travelled from great distances just to come to Streetsboro. On Saturday, the Sonny Geraci show was also fantastic. What an entertainer! After the fireworks Buddy Dee and the Hitmen wow-ed the crowd with their dynamic vocals. We can all share in the pride that comes from knowing that Streetsboro Family Days is being recognized in Northeast Ohio as among the Who´s Who of providers of quality live entertainment at a community event.
Thanks to the cash contribution of the Chapel at Tinker´s Creek, on Sunday, children under 12 lined up two hours before the doors opened for free wristbands to ride the rides. (Unfortunately, I heard that due to a mix-up, two children who had waited in line did not get their wristbands. I am sorry about that and wish I could correct that mishap!) Lisa´s School of Dance and Keithe Williams Performing Arts Academy gave stellar performances that I thought were amazing. I am so impressed with the talent of the young dancers and the skill of the dance instructors in Streetsboro. The Dog Show on Sunday was also a big hit. The judges had the extremely difficult job of choosing the cutest dog. (They were all cute!)
The fireworks, the 5-K 10-K race, the Championship League baseball game, Karaoke, the cooking contest, the martial arts demonstrations, and the cornhole tournament were other fun events we enjoyed.
I would like to extend a special thank you to the Geis Companies (the main event sponsor), the Giambrone Companies, L´Oreal, Streetsboro Visitors Bureau, the Federation of Eagles # , Classic Auto Group, Soft-Lite, Wal-mart, and Target. Thanks also to the many other businesses, individuals, public entities, and organizations-- too numerous to mention individually--who contributed money, time, materials, and services. Lets continue to work together as a communitee to combine our resources and put on an even more spectacular party in 2008!
Deborah Carothers
Former Chairperson, Streetsboro Family Days
